The last increase to Sewer Rates was 7 years ago...electricity, chemicals and cost of services has increased the cost to operating the entire sewage system and disposal over that time period. Cost increases are due to the County being required to comply with new regulations regarding a complete overhaul of how they can dispose of final waste product and concern for PFAS. Currently, the County Water and Waste converts the final sludge product into a fertilizer product that is used on farm fields. That is process will no longer be allowed due to PFAS. Instead, the sludge must be sent to a landfill, (expensive) or a new process must be developed. The County is undertaking a massive project to avoid the more costly method of disposal which is landfilling the sludge. The new process will reduce the volume of effluent through a number of steps so that substantially less sludge will be the end result.
